Electrical Connectors

Electrical connectors are devices which mechanically and electrically joins electrical conductors to other conductors and to the terminals of apparatus and other equipment. This term includes a wide range of products made for connecting small conductors taken from communication circuits or on the other side of the spectrum, large cables and busbars. Electrical connectors are distinctive by a range of factors including size, ease of connecting and disconnecting and insulation between pins.


There are a slew of ways electrical connectors are applied to conductors. One such way is a soldered connector where they have holes or tubes which are approximately the same diameter as the conductor. Once the conductor and connecter are heated, the conductor is inserted and solder flowed into the joint unit until it is filled. Connectors which are solderless are applied by connectors in a bolted assembly or by clamping the conductor or staking or crimping under great mechanical force.


A single type of electrical connector that connects two or more wires to a single connection point is known as a connector. Another type of single point connectors is wire nuts. Common connector types are T-tap connectors, in-line splice couplers, stud connectors and terminal lungs. T-tap connectors are also known as quick slide connectors are used commonly to tap into a wire which already exists. Couplers join the connector’s end-to-end. Stud connectors join the conductor to equipment studs where the clamp of the stud is smooth or threaded to align the stud.


Connectors which are commonly used for splices and taps in wiring of buildings as well as for copper wires and copper weld conductors are known as split-bolt conductors. In measuring by length, the bolt-shape casting has a deep and wide slot. When the conductors is inserted into the slot and the nut is drawn up which clamps the conductors together inside the bolt. Flexible connectors, also known as expansion connectors are known to allowing some limited motion between conductors which are connected. The short lengths of flexible copper braid are combined with the clamp portions of the connector and a telescoping guide may be aligned with it.


Matched plugs and receptacles are considered separable types which may be readily separated to disconnect a group of conductors or a conductor from the circuit system. Separable connectors mostly used for the connection of equipment to an electric wiring system as well as portable appliances. Locking types are specifically manufactured in the case of it being coupled they would not be separated by a pull or a strain on the cable or cord. In a typical construction the plug is inserted and twisted through a small arc and locking it guardedly in place.


Convenience outlets, otherwise known as plug receptacles are a section of wiring devices which get distributed throughout buildings for the attachment of cord plug caps from portable appliances such as lamps. In the case of residences, there must be at least one such outlet being provided for every twelve linear feet or a major fraction of wall perimeter. Grounding receptacles are also equipped with an additional contact that accepts the U-shaped prong of a grounding attachment plug.


Electrical, electronic components as well as devices occasionally have terminal blocks or plug and socket connectors. Individual screw terminals as well as quick-disconnect or fast-on connectors however, are more commonly used. There are a few components which have a bare lead wire for soldering. They are manufactured using casting. A Universal Serial Bus (USB) is one such electrical connector which is widely used amongst personal computers and many other devices.
