Lanyards

Lanyard is a strap or cord which is commonly worn around on the neck to hold the identification whistle, keys, badge or other small objects. It is very common to see lanyards used everywhere by schools, businesses, hospitals, conventions, and reunions or even at special events and in many other recreational activities.

Lanyards can be used as an advertising tool that has a customized name or logo printed on the strap. They also come in many different colors and types of hardware that should be attached at the bottom to hold an ID badge, keys or whistle. These lanyards can be made of cotton, cord, polyester or nylon twill.

The cord type is the least expensive lanyard but it cannot be printed because it lacks of the flat surface for the strap-type. Some lanyards have a small bulb that contains retractable reel with an ID badge or keys. They also have breakaway connectors just in case if the lanyard gets caught in-between and it release before removing or wearing the lanyard on the neck.

The strap-type of lanyards is made of nylon, cotton or polyester and is often printed with a team or company name, logo or product. There are three different printing methods used such as screen printing, dye sublimation and hot stamping.

Hot stamping a metal plate that is specifically designed according to the artwork that is provided by the customer. The plate must be heated and place a color film over the lanyard but the plate must be applied with pressure. Only using the heat of the film and pressure can transfer the color and design to the material. Hot stamping used a single color and it is the most economical as well as it is most suitable for applications which include student badges, reunions and trade shows.

Screen printing can provide a higher quality result and is more durable. The screen printing method uses a fine mesh screen that is made from the customer’s artwork. Screen is normally laid on top of the material and colored ink will be applied over the screen. Using a squeegee can push the ink through the mesh screen in order to create the design underneath the fabric and the heat can cures the ink for a high resolution result.

The dye sublimation is a superior printing process that can create multicolored and detailed designs. Using this method, the customer’s design will be transferred into a fine paper that uses the dye sublimation inks with the paper place on the lanyard. That is when the heat and pressure will be applied and causes the image to become enmeshed with the material. The design will remain smooth because of the method used and this will also allow for an image that is less prone to abrasion and fading.

Lanyards also come with different hardware. For instance, the O-ring is common for using with keys or a whistle and it may have split-connector as this is easy for removal and snap back into the original place.

The swivel snap-hook is good for the ID badges which have a rectangular hole at the top and another type is the bulldog clip that can be squeezed and both the serrated jaws will be opened. Lanyards can be inexpensive and purchased in bulk for professional, promotional use or in single units.
