What is a Densitometer?

Densitometers are devices utilized for the measurement of degree for darkness of a photographic or semi transparent material of a reflecting surface. The densitometer also acts as the source of light that is provided for a photoelectric cell. It helps to detect the density of the samples that are placed in between the photoelectric cell and the light source from the differences recorded in their various readings. Modern densitometers also have similar components that are now integrated with other equipment for more uses such as the electronic circuitry for more accurate readings.


Additionally, they can also be used as scientific equipment that are designed to measure the optical density of a particular object. They are used in various extensive ranges of scientific applications. They are also commonly utilized by photographers and printers that require the need for regular checks on their quality of work. Many companies that manufacture densitometers these days also include specialty equipment that are specially customized for that particular application.


Some densitometers also utilize a transmission technique where the light is transmitted through the substance that is going to be measured. The photoelectric cell will follow up by reading the light as it passes through the substance. The optical density is usually determined by how much light is able to make it through the object that is being read. This specific type of densitometer is typically used to measure the optical density in film making. They use the data obtained by the many different ways during the development of film processes.


The reflection process can also be utilized with more solid objects that are not able to be used with the transmission densitometer. In cases like this, the amount of light that is reflected by the object is measured. An example would be the photographer using the transmission method to read the film whereas the reflection method is used to read a developed photograph. Some of the densitometers are however capable of conducting both of the functions. Thus, it allows people to adjust the settings of the densitometer accordingly to suit the various uses.


Many modern types of Germans are capable of the manufacturing of both types of measurements in their selectable format with the click of a switch. They are commonly used in the film photography industry in order to measure the densities of negatives with the switch. The switch when placed in the “T” refers to the transmission position whereas the saturation of resulting print in the “R” for reflection position. Such measurements would allow most photographers to correctly choose adequate type of photo paper as well as selectively choose the best exposure that helps to obviate the experiments with test strips. Once both the dark room and paper has been appropriately collaborated, the first print from the previous experiments will then be measured for the success.


On top of that, printers can also utilize densitometers in order to check the colour saturation as well as to confirm that the print run is conducted consistently. Densitometers are commonly used during various press checks in order to ensure that the material is printed appropriately without any errors. After which, it is also used to compare the appearance of the films used to prepare the different print plates with the printed results.


There are plenty of ways for a densitometer to be used. In specialty types of densitometry, they can be used to measure the density of a human bone. The density that is measured here is by passing the x rays through the human body. In this case, the bone density is determined just by observing how many x ray passes through the bone. The extreme variations in the density can be identified by studying the x ray film. The more porous bones will tend to show up darker than usual on the x rays whereas denser bones will come off much whiter. This serves as an indication that the areas of the films are not as heavily exposed towards the x rays.


It is always important to ensure that before the use of the densitometer, to let it warm up first. This is generally important as it helps to calibrate them in order to ensure that the readings are generally consistent and accurate. Calibration can also be accomplished with the use of calibration cards provided by manufacturers. Every card has the number of sample areas of density that it can be ran through the densitometer just by the use of device readings compared against the printed level of the density.
