What are Locomotives?

Locomotives are types of specialized train cars. They are usually self propelled. They generate energy through the various uses such as burning of fuel, magnetic levitation followed by many other experimental methods. They can either be used to push or pull train cars that are seen on railroad tracks all over the world. It helps to propel passengers and freight to various places and locations.


Locomotives are known for their traditional pulling of trains from the front. It is also becoming an increasingly common sight to witness the push pull operation. This means that the locomotive would pull the train from the front and another would push it from the back. The locomotive in this type of arrangement is controlled by the control cab usually positioned at the front of the train. This operation is mostly infeasible even if the train helpers at the mid train or tail end are provided with assistance. This is due to the fact that the front end of the train already consumes over 26000 horse power for the traction followed by the mid train or tail end, which might only consume 9000 horse power for traction.


A locomotive is extremely powerful. This is due to it being capable of the push and pull of a chain of train cars. Train cars would lack a source of power unlike locomotives. The locomotives movements are completely dependent on the locomotive. They are able to pull a long string made up of heavy vehicles traveling over flat and graded surfaces that are known as powerhouses for trains.


The first locomotives developed back in the first decade of the 1800s were powered by steam. Most locomotives back then were low powered and fairly crude despite the given fact that the engines were quickly refined during the 1800s in order to create the steam that is powerful enough for the locomotives. The steam locomotives that were powerful had the ability to burn wood, coat and many other types of materials that are dependent on what is available.


Locomotives enabled the construction of different railroads to be done. They were a very dominant method of land transport for both the freight and people through the first half of the twentieth century. Despite the classic image of the locomotive involving the placement at the head of the train, the locomotive also has the ability to push from the back. Some of which also functions with the use of push pull operations. This means that a locomotive has the ability to pull a train in a single direction and also push it in another. This eliminates the need for time to be consumed during the track switching as the trains are now easily moved in both directions.


Locomotives tend to be generally more muscular when it is designed for the pulling of freight trains. This is due to the fact that such freight trains can get very heavy and long in comparison to locomotives used to transport passengers which are usually more lightweight. The switcher or shunting locomotives are also the most agile and smallest of the lot that is used to move the train cars around the yard. There are also rules to adhere to being that the switchers are capable of the immense amount of traction placed on them. This enables them to be able to quickly get trains in motion and uses the energy to move towards the end destination.


Many railroads continue to run the legacy of the classic steam locomotives. However, there are also many others that function on fuel and diesel instead in order to power up their locomotives. These days, the electric locomotives are also increasingly growing in popularity along side the locomotives that uses the experimental technology.
