What are Hydraulic Tubes?

Hydraulic Tubes

Hydraulic tubes are seamless steel precision pipes that are specially manufactured for hydraulics. These tubes have standard sizes for different range of pressures with the standard diameters up to 100mm. They are usually supplied by the manufacturers in lengths of 6m, oiled, cleaned and plugged. They can also be interconnected by different types of flanges especially for the larger sizes as well as welding, cones with o-ring seal and other types of flare connection by cut rings. In larger sizes, they used hydraulic pipes by directly joining the tubes but welding is not acceptable as the interior cannot be inspected.


Hydraulic tube is different from a rubber hose in many ways. This type of tube contains a braided stainless steel sleeve inside the rubber outer covering. The sleeve also allows the hydraulic hose to withstand a great amount of pressure. The hydraulic tubes have couplings that are crimped on with a special machine to create a fitting that can withstand the high pressure under the system when operates.


The lifespan of the hydraulic tubes is not permanent as they usually flexed too much, stretching, twisting or scratching the surface. However, too high or too low operating temperatures may break down the tubes as there is a sudden sharp rise or drop in the internal pressures. Using the wrong type, size or weight of the tube can also cause the hydraulic tubes to break down. They should be replaced before they fail especially if these tubes are used for heavy machines, brakes and safety critical hydraulic machinery. If the tube shown cracking, bubbles or swelling when worn or not, they should be replaced immediately as recommended by the manufacturer to prevent any accidents.


There are many hydraulic tubes that are rubber coated with a braided nylon, woven or stainless sleeve on the exterior as well as on the interior of the tube. The outer protective covering can prevent the tube from chaffed or cut when coming in contact with the other part of the machine. However, often the hydraulic tube will also contain a flexible inner tube at the center and this is considered as a typical hydraulic system that consists of two tubes.


Usually, one tube is for high pressure while the other is for low pressure return tube. These tubes are connected to a hydraulic pump and they carry the hydraulic fluid to an apparatus that is hydraulically operated such as the hydraulic cylinder. The pump can be either driven by a vehicle’s engine or electrically driven.


Many hydraulic tubes are fit for quick-disconnect type which allows a tube to be replaced or removed without having to mess up the entire system of air. This type of quick-disconnect is often used in the farming and construction that implements to utilize and aid in changing of tools and power. An example, a hydraulic jack hammer can be used on a crane and switched to a skid steer type of tractor such as a bobcat.


In order to reinforce layers of a hydraulic tube, they must be much heavier and stiffer than a non-hydraulic version. These tubes can be constructed to fit an application with bends by doing it slowly. The right angle bends can be completed by using a hard line fitting bent. The hydraulic tubes consist of multiple sections of a flexible tube and hard lines are usually connected in a series.


The hydraulic systems often build up heat so that the process of pumping the hydraulic fluid can operate and generate a greater amount of heat. As for the hydraulic cooling systems, they are incorporated into a hydraulic system by resembling a finned cylinder or a small radiator for the cooling unit to prevent the fluid from reaching a dangerous operating temperature.
