Also known as field glasses or binocular telescopes, binoculars are a pair of mirror symmetrical telescopes that allow a user to view distant objects using both eyes. To allow both eyes to view distant objects symmetrically, the binoculars require two separate telescopes, one for each eye, held together in the device called binoculars allowing binocular vision. The telescopes are mounted symmetrically side-by-side and aligned to point accurately in the same direction, providing the user with undistorted vision of distant objects. Unlike a monocular (telescope) which only makes use of one telescope to view objects, binoculars are able to provide the user with three-dimensional viewing of distant objects, whilst promoting visual clarity and acuity. The size of binoculars can vary, from regular handheld commercial binoculars that can be stored easily to huge pedestal mounted military binoculars. The size determines the distance that a pair of binoculars would be able to range. The bigger a pair of binoculars is, the bigger the lenses inside it, and therefore being able to provide the user with high quality distant viewing of objects. Regular commercial binoculars are easy to hold and store due to their size. Both hands would be used to steady the instrument, to achieve a comfortable and stable position.

The applications of binoculars are vast, ranging from being used in military operations to leisure activities. A must for bird-watchers and hunters, binoculars are even used at sporting events by spectators who may be seated far from the action, thus using binoculars to get clearer and closer views of the action. Many tourist destinations around the world also have swivel-mounted binoculars to allow tourists to get better views of distant objects. An example can be the Grand Canyon, where tourists would not be able to see far away objects, thus these binoculars have been installed for the convenience of the tourists. However, such binoculars usually work by inserting a coin, which gives the user a limited period of time to view distant objects through the binoculars. They are often rather large and expensive to be installed at the locations, which is why they are required to be mounted on a swivel and require a fee to be used. In professional situations, militaries use binoculars for day-to-day operations. Binoculars are essential for them as with the binoculars, the military personnel would be able to spot enemies at a distant and take the necessary action. Not only that, they can also safeguard their territory and prevent and intruders from coming in. Their use, together with sophisticated 21st century technology makes the military much more efficient than it previously was.

Binoculars have several sizes and specifications to meet the demands of the public and the application. A full-size pair of binoculars would make use of lenses which are 40mm or larger. These binoculars have the capability to capture more light and perform better in low light conditions as compared to its smaller variations. While being able to capture more light, the binoculars are able to provide steadier images and wider field of view. As their size is rather large, these binoculars are not ideal for backpacking, but can be used to wildlife viewing or on boats. A slightly smaller variation of these binoculars would be the mid-size binoculars, with 30-39mm objective lenses. These types of binoculars have the ideal size for wildlife and sports use, however being slightly heavy for backpacking. The moderate size allows for above-average light transmission for great viewing quality. An even smaller variation is the compact binoculars, which have objective lenses smaller than 30mm. They form the most ideal pair of binoculars that can be carried along while backpacking and work efficiently during daytime outdoor activities.

The types of binoculars discussed here only form a fraction of the entire family of binoculars that are available in the market today. With technology continuously improving, manufacturers continue to produce better binoculars that cater to the needs of the variety of consumers.
