Beddings

Also known as bedclothes and bed sheets, beddings refer to materials that are laid on top of a mattress for the purpose of comfort, protection of the mattress, decorating the bed and for hygiene. Another reason why beddings are used on top of mattresses is because it would be inconvenient to regularly wash the mattress itself. Since beddings are easily removable, they can be washed on a regular basis for good hygiene. Removing and washing beddings would also be more economical as compared to replacing the bed itself, which is why many people across the world use beddings. Many people tend to use multiple sets of beddings, so as when either of the bedding set is sent for washing, they would have a spare set to be used and not compromise comfort and hygiene. Beddings also provide protection against weather. For example in countries that experience winter, beddings are necessity in order to stay warm. How the term bedding is perceived around the world also varies, as for example according to American English, bedding would only mean the material placed on a mattress and would not include things such as the mattress or the bed frame. However, according to British English, beddings tend to refer to the entire bed along with the mattress and the bed sheets on them.

Bedding set would include a flat fitted sheet to cover the mattress, which has to be in an appropriate size in accordance to the size of the mattress, a flat top sheet which can be the blanket, pillows and pillowcases. In countries that experience cold climate, additional blankets and sheets can be used to ensure the necessary insulation against the cold weather. Many people also tend to decorate their bed with stuffed toys and figures. These are not classified under the category of beddings but can be usually found being used together with beddings. Such items help to provide the user with reassurance and more comfort during sleep.

As there are several different sizes of beds, for example the queen sized, king sized or the single bed, beddings also have to be manufactured to comply with these variations in sizes. Keeping in mind the size of the bed that bedding is being made for; manufacturers make beddings according to the dimensions of the bed and the mattress they are meant for. However, determining the bed size would not give manufacturers the exact dimensions that the beddings should be. Bed sizes vary across countries, for example as Europeans are usually taller and of bigger built than Asians, the sizes of the beds in these two regions would also vary to meet the requirements of the demographic. Thus, the beddings for a king sized bed in Europe may not be the same size as beddings for a king sized bed in Asia.

The material that is often used to make beddings is cotton as it is very soft, providing optimum comfort for the user. Cotton is vastly available and has a soft, smooth texture, which would not cause the user discomfort and allow for a more comfortable rest. Cotton can also be mixed with other materials such as polyester. However, such sheets tend to be less comfortable as compared to sheets and beddings made entirely out of cotton. As polyester is not a natural material, beddings made out it are less breathable, absorb lesser moisture and pill easier. Another type of bed sheets can be flannel bed sheets. Such sheets are mostly used in countries that have cold climates. The thick make up of these sheets provides for warmth during winter seasons, making them an ideal choice in keeping cold out. These sheets are also able to keep warmth within, which also aids comfort for the user. There are several other materials that can be used in making beddings, depending on the demographics’ requirements and their spending power.
