Types of Photo Albums

In today’s golden age of digital technology, there are two main types of photo albums that exist in the world; classic book photo albums and digital photo albums. Although digital technology has been replacing the classic book photo albums, many people still choose to keep the latter as they can serve as precious keepsakes. Both types of photo albums offer different advantages, depending on an individual’s preference. However, both do serve the basic function of storing and displaying an individual’s favorite photographs, for example wedding, holiday or a special occasion photos.

Book Photo Albums

These physical photo books or photo albums are actual bound books that contain either protective sleeve in which photos can be slipped into or sticky pages on which photos can simply be glued upon. Photo books that use adhesives to glue the photos onto the pages are generally older versions of photo albums as compared to those that require a user to slide in photos into a protective sleeve. The new generation of these types of photo albums usually has photos that are directly printed on the page itself. An individual selects digital photos and sends them to a printer for processing. Such photos usually tend to stick to the opposite page depending on the type of paper used to print the photos. Therefore to prevent the photos from sticking to one another and prevent heat from deteriorating the quality of the photos overtime, printers usually place a thin sheet of special paper in between pages to sustain quality of the pictures.

Such albums usually tend to have a lot of weight due to their large size and the paper used. Albums that use thin plastic slots in which pictures are sled into, can be purchased in a variety of sizes and usually do not weight that much. However the disadvantage of using those albums is that one has to manually slide pictures into the pockets which can be very tedious. Photos that are printed on pages can be costly depending on the paper used to print the pictures and if any editing has to be done. They can also be too bulky to carry around. The fact that a lot of effort has to be put in to create these albums simply increases their value to an individual and can be very precious memories of special events, for example a wedding. Another disadvantage of book photo albums is that they cannot be shared with many people at one time.

Digital Photo Albums

As their name would suggest, these albums make use of digital technology and can come in a variety of forms, being uploaded on the internet, digital devices that store images or even mobile phones. With the advancements in technology, these forms of photo albums have gained much recognition due to their ease of accessibility and low cost. Many online websites allow users to upload images in high quality and classify them into albums according to the user’s preference. Some of these websites even allow users to edit the picture as to how they want; with varied layouts, sizes, designs and many more options. Users can add description of the pictures, comment and share it with almost anyone across the world.

The production cost of these albums is usually zero, unless an individual purchases a special device that displays high quality pictures. These devices are also very useful as they can store thousands of photos in a small space, reducing the amount of weight a user has to carry around. Some even come with a card slot, in-built editing features and internet access, which allow a user to efficiently capture photos using his or her camera, transfer to the device, edit and share it with anyone, anywhere. However a disadvantage of these albums is that anyone can get hold of the pictures and tamper with them, edit to produce images that may be offensive to the user. Also authenticity of the image is decreased as anyone can claim the picture to be theirs as they can simply take if off the net. The value of such albums on the net also decreases as very little effort is required to make them and they are literally free-of-charge, so a user would not value these images as much as those that require effort and are in the form of a book.
