Laboratory Furniture

Laboratories usually tend to have the basic laboratory equipment that are required by scientists to conduct their research and experiments. Different equipment are designed to perform different tasks during experiments. For example, a Bunsen burner is required to heat chemicals and solutions up, whereas a test tube is required to simply hold a liquid within itself. People generally tend to classify any type of equipment in a laboratory as laboratory equipment. However, a laboratory also holds a great deal of laboratory furniture which is different from laboratory equipment, and serves different purposes. Laboratory furniture are items used to assist with the experiments conducted in a lab, while also withstanding the rigors of the lab environment. Laboratories may contain several different pieces of furniture that are specialized to support different function.

Forensic cabinets

As their name would suggest, these furniture items are cabinets used as storage units for holding and protecting evidence samples that are used in forensic investigations. These cabinets may have chambers within them which hold individual pieces of forensic evidence. Also, these cabinets may use electricity if the forensic evidence is required to be stored in special conditions. The chambers can be manipulated to create those required conditions for the evidence to remain in its original condition for experiments and research by scientists later. Aside from chambers, these cabinets can also have specialized rains and ventilation systems.

Laboratory benches

Present in all types of labs, laboratory benches are an important part of a lab. These long tables form the laboratory furniture on which most experiments are conducted on. As experiments are conducted on them, it is important that the material used to make these tables be coated with special chemicals and be resistant to corrosion. The material should also be fire-resistant in case of a fire break out in the lab.

Apparel dispensers

Some labs require the scientists to wear specialized apparel to protect them as well as not bring in any contaminants into the lab. To prevent this, they have to wear special apparel before entering a specific area in the lab or the entire lab itself. Apparel dispensers are used to hold these apparels, which can be gloves, masks or coats etc.

General cabinets

Unlike the forensic cabinets, these cabinets are used to store general laboratory equipment to be used during experiments, for example thongs. Some general cabinets may be rather short and thus can also be used as laboratory benches.

Chemical cabinets

As their name implies, chemical cabinets are used to store volatile, corrosive or dangerous chemicals that if left in the open could deteriorate in quality or be harmful to the environment. Chemical cabinets have to be specially designed so that they can suit the needs of the situation. For example, the chemical cabinet should prevent chemical spills within the cabinet while also being fire and corrosion resistant. They also can have rows to hold chemicals securely in an orderly manner.

Drawers

Usually located inside general cabinets or laboratory tables, drawers are used to hold essential equipment required during experiments, such as goggles or Bunsen burners. Some other equipment such as test tube racks and thongs may also be stored inside these drawers. The reason why these drawers are located inside laboratory tables is for the purpose of convenience.

Carts

These are one of the most versatile pieces of laboratory furniture located inside labs. These furniture allow for the easy transfer of heavy or brittle equipment throughout the lab safely and with ease.

Stools

The purpose of using stools in laboratories is to promote a safe environment. Stools are evident in almost all types of labs and allow scientists to sit down while conducting experiments. Stools do not have any back or arm rest which can catch on things such as clothing and cause accidents. Also stools can be more easily moved around as compared to chairs.
