Carbon is a non-metallic element found in substances and all life forms. It is the fourth most abundant element in the universe. Its abundance paves way to the production of many carbon products. Carbon has various forms such as diamond and graphite being the most well-known. These two can best describe the differences among the allotropes of carbon for the reason that diamonds are the hardest material known and highly transparent while graphite is the softest substance on Earth and is opaque and black. As mentioned above, all life forms such as plants and animals contain carbon and will remain on the element even when they decay. A good way to understand this phenomenon is by learning how petroleum forms. Petroleum substances are fossilized ancient planktons that became richer in carbon after going through and being buried for years within hot layers and pressure forming reservoirs. The preserved carbons are now utilized in various applications; from being an energy source to vehicles to production of kitchen utensils.


Some of the most important carbon products are fuel, steel and carbon fiber. Hydrocarbon is the most common source of fuel. Fuels are combustible substances that make vehicle run when ignited. Steel is a widely used material in the manufacture of various products such as cars, kitchen utensils, roof and a lot more. Steel is a combination of carbon and iron. Carbon acts as a hardening agent so steel can be a better material for a lot of applications and for manufacturing quality products.


Stainless steel is produced when steel is combined with 10.5% or more of chromium. Chromium is the reason why stainless are corrosive resistant. The amount carbon contained in stainless steel can be as low as 0.2% and as high as 1.2%. The amount to use depends on the type of blade the manufacturer is creating. Products made from this material are preferred because they are easy to care and maintain. They will not only last for a long time but their good appearance will also stay. Stainless steel is a good material for knife construction. It can produce a good edge when sharpened properly and regularly. Combining carbon steel and stainless will result to stain resistant and hard knife.


High carbon stainless steel is a metal alloy which contains a high amount of carbon. The amount of carbon is huge; it can be as much as 1.2% and as low as 0.2%. The reason for this depends on the manufacturer and the type of blade they intend to create. Carbon steel has a strong edge when sharpened correctly and with regular intervals and it is known as a much harder material for using in knife construction. Carbon steel knives are known to corrode more easily and it needs to be oiled on a daily basis. One would need to follow manufacturer’s instructions for seasoning and sharpening to increase the live of a carbon steel knife.


When stainless steel and carbon steel are combined to get a high carbon stainless steel, you receive the best of each alloy. This steel would be resistant to staining or rust and it is very hard while holding an edge with minimal maintenance. This is generally regarded as a higher quality stainless steel alloy.


Some of the issues in which manufacturers encounter while making high carbon stainless steel are chromium content, carbon content and tempering. Carbon content hardens the steel. Should too much carbon be added, the alloy ends up becoming brittle. Should manufacturers use too little of carbon, then it is not sufficient to harden the steel. The amount of chromium can have a large impact on the high carbon product stainless steel as well.
