It is important to properly maintain your garden in order for the plants to grow well. Having a well maintained garden is one that produces beautiful flowers and edible fruits and vegetables. Not only does a healthy garden enhance the looks of your household, but it also increases the value of your home. There are many garden services that can do it for you. If you are an avid gardener then here are some tips and methods to take care of your beautiful garden.

Finding the right tools

Firstly, it is important that you have the right tools for gardening. It also important to take care of these tools as you do not want them to break down when you need them the most. Buy the best tools that you can afford, it will be a good investment. High quality tools are able to last you for a long time. It is always better to buy tools made out of stainless steel as they will not rust. Forks, spades and shovels made with hard ash are also unlikely to break or splinter when using them.

It is also important to store and organize the tools in a basket so that they are easily accessible. It will save you a lot of time and frustration when you need to maintain your garden. Ensure that you return the tools back in the basket too; this will make gardening a lot simpler and quicker. Also, be careful not to leave rakes, hoes or other tools which have horizontal blades lying around the area. If stepped on, the pole will hit someone and possibly injure them.
To maintain your garden tools, rinse them after use and place them in a mixture of machine oil and clean sand. This is useful especially for tools that are prone to rust. The oil coat the metal, resisting rust and the sand will polish the surface and remove debris. If the blade of a hoe begins to get dull, sharpen it with a sharpening stone. This is to reduce the effort needed.

Prevention of diseases

In order to achieve a healthy garden, it is also important to take precautious steps to prevent pests and diseases from infecting your garden. One of the most important things to prevent diseases is to monitor the soil drainage. Many soggy roots start to rot if there is excess water. It is also important to have sufficient sunlight so that the plant can stay strong against diseases that may attack weaker plants.

Give plants enough place to grow, if they reach maturity without a crowd then they will most likely be very healthy. With enough space, plants do not face as much competition for sunlight, nutrients, water and fresh air. Air flow becomes stagnant in an overcrowded garden. Without proper air circulation, there is less evaporation occurring which leaves the plants prone to fungi growth and other diseases.

Prevention of Pests

Pests can be very annoying and harmful to the health of your garden. Besides pesticides, there are safer methods to keep pests away. One way is to attract useful insects such as spiders or wasp that prey on pests. This can be done by sprinkling flowering plants. Another simple yet efficient way to keep insects out would be to use floating row covers. These covers allow sunlight, fresh air and water to pass through while keeping pests out. To remove small sap sucking insects that cling on to young buds and stems, simply spray the plants with a strong jet of water. Be careful though, the strong jet of water may damage weaker plants.

By following these steps, you can be sure that your garden will be beautiful and healthy. Not to mention, it will save you a lot of hassle and time. Gardening should not be seen as a chore, but if you really feel that it is then there are many gardening services that can do the job for you. However, gardening services may not always do it to your liking, which is why you should do it yourself instead.
