Electrical Plugs & Sockets

Electrical Plugs and sockets are mechanism used for permitting electrically operated devices such as appliances, gadgets and machines to connect in an alternating current (AC) source in a building for operations.

 

Generally, plug is a movable connector that is attached to electrically operated device cable and socket is permanent equipment attached to building structure and energized by electrical circuit.

 

These plugs and socket varies in current and voltage rating such as 220 V and 110 V ratings which are widely used by many countries and it also varies from shape, type of connectors and size.

 

Nowadays, there are 15 electrical outlets and plugs which are used internationally. These plugs and outlets are distinguished by letters assigned by US Department of Commerce International Trade Administration (ITA).

 

Here are the some types of electrical sockets and plugs and its specifications
Type A - These Types A electric sockets and plugs are polarized and classified in class II ungrounded plug which has 2 flat parallel flat prongs sizes are 1.5mm thick, 12.7 apart space length, 15.9 – 18.3mm length and 7.9mm wide for neutral blade and 6.3 mm wide for hot blade.

Type B – It is a class I plug and designated as American Standard NEMA 5-15 which is widely used in United States, this type B plug and socket has three terminals which consist of 2 flat terminals that has a size of 1.5mm thick, 15.9 to 18.3mm length, 12.7mm spacing and 6.3mm width and also 4.8mm diameter U or round shape earth pin which is 3.2mm longer compared to the two flat blades.

Type C – most commonly known as Europlug. It is a type plug and socket which is ungrounded with a two insulated 4mm round prong with 19mm in length 18.6mm apart from the base and 17.5mm from the tip.

Type D – a standard socket plug in India that originates in British. It is designed with 3 round prongs with variation of sizes, the central earth pin has 20.6 mm length and 7.1mm in diameter, the line pin is 5.1 mm in length and 14.9mm for neutral pin.

Type E – this type E plug and socket is designed with a permanent round pin mounted to the socket serve as ground.

Type F – it is similar to type C excluding that it is round in shape and has 2 additional clip grounding to the side.

Type G – this G type socket and plug is consist of 3 rectangular prongs that forms in isosceles triangle.

Type H – constructed with 4.5mm three round prongs that is 19mm length that forms triangular shape.

  • Operating Voltage: 220V and 240V
  • Plug Rating: 16A
  • Compatibility: Type C & H plugs and sockets

 

Type I, Type J, Type K, Type L, Type M, Type N and Type O are also includes in the types of sockets that is standardize also by ITA.

These type of plugs and sockets are constructed with different standards depending on country specifications and requirements.
