Test Probes and Their Uses

A test probe, also known as test lead or scope probe, is a physical device used to connect electrical test equipment to the device being tested. It can range from a very simple device to a sophisticated complex probe that is expensive and fragile. Probes make life a lot easier when the working ability and measurements need to be taken from devices. There are many types of probes in the industry today. They can be used to take various types of measurements for different purposes.


Voltage probes are one of the categories of probes used to take readings of voltage on the device under test. Then, there are also voltmeter probes equipped with a connecter at one end to be connected to a voltmeter and the test probe on the other end. The test probe is coated with plastic to prevent any electrical shocks to the user. Ordinary voltmeter probes can be used for voltages up to 1000 and currents of a few amperes. The test wire used in these probes is usually made of very fine wires to ensure accuracy.


Tweezer probes are another category of probes. They operate using the tweezer mechanism to take measurements of voltage or other readings between pins which are closely spaced. Oscilloscope probes, on the other hand, display instantaneous waveforms of the varying electrical quantities unlike other equipment that give numerical values of stable quantities. Also, oscilloscopes and other instruments that must acquire accurate reading of high frequency signals use shielded cables. This prevents the test probe from picking up any unwanted frequencies from the surroundings. Some instruments that need to take readings of low level signals also use shielded cables in order to get accurate results. There are also temperature probes that are used to take the surface temperature of the device under test.
