Role of Brewers

Brewers, in terms of beer, are producers of the different varieties of beer. The process of manufacturing beer is referred to as brewing. Brewing of beer is done by steeping a starch source such as cereal grains in water before fermenting it with yeast. Although there can be slight variations in the process when manufacturing different types of beers, these steps form the basics of beer brewing. Brewing of beer has been around since the 6th millennium BC, with evidences stating that it was conducted in ancient Egypt. Brewing of beer is mostly done in a brewery and breweries form a significant sector of the world economy today. Although beer can be brewed at home, a brewery is a dedicated building where only beer is made under controlled conditions. How large a brewery is or the make up of a brewery is dependent on the diversity of the processes in the brewery, the equipment used, and the kinds of beers that the brewery produces. As the brewing process of beer has significant stages that are usually carried over a period of time, the sections in a brewery are usually divided into sections to cater to each of these stages.

Another factor that affects the size of a brewery is the production scale, such that the volume of beer that the brewery produces. The variety of beer produces also determines the size of the brewery. Smaller breweries would produce beer on a smaller scale for a smaller market, whereas large breweries can have massive multinational conglomerates across the world. Such large breweries produce hundreds of millions of barrels of beer annually and market them to a much larger market as compared to the small scale breweries. An example of a large scale brewer in Asia is Asia Pacific Breweries (APB). An example of a small scale brewery can be a microbrewery, a term coined in the late 20th century to describe a small brewery. To qualify as a microbrewery, an establishment should produce less than 15000 barrels of beer annually. Such breweries usually only serve a regional or local demographic.

Microbreweries have been around for a long time. They were probably the first type of breweries that ever originated. As beer has the attribute to go bad if it is not refrigerated for a long time, many towns in the past had their own local brewery due to the lack of refrigeration and inadequate transport systems. As technology advanced and refrigeration was made possible, along with better transportation connecting parts of the world, local breweries decided to shift their business and target a larger market. However microbreweries still do exist today, particularly due to the fact that more time is spent on producing high quality beer at a smaller scale. Many people prefer beer from microbreweries as these establishments tend to pay more attention and spend more time on the brewing process of their beer, ensuring a greater quality taste. Also, microbreweries tend to have a smaller budget due to their small scale. Therefore microbreweries may be successful in a region, but not particularly on a national scale. Many large scale brewers today also spend a great deal of effort to ensure that high quality beer is brewed. The processes are closely paid attention to and high technology instruments are used to brew the best level of beer.

Aside from the microbreweries, there are also the regional breweries that supply beer to a fixed geographical location. Contract brewing also exists in the beer industry. Beer manufacturers may hire contract brewer to handle the beer’s marketing, sales and distribution leaving the manufacturer brewery to solely concentrate on the brewing process of beer.

Aside from regional brewers, microbrewers and large scale brewers, there may be other types of brewers present in the world as well. One example can be illegal brewers who brew beer illegally at a small scale and sell it discreetly in places where there is a ban on beer production and consumption.
