This is where an IT solutions analyst becomes useful to the business. An IT solution analyst is a professional that is able to analyze the business needs of a client and IT systems to generate useful solutions that will be beneficial to the company.

A lot is expected from an IT solution analyst, the most important thing is the in depth knowledge on a wide range of software products to recommend to clients to meet their business expectations and needs. In larger companies, IT solution analysts are found in their own respective IT departments. Smaller companies may go to a consulting services firm to hire IT solution analysts for a period of time. This is also known as outsourcing.

The four main tasks that an IT solution analyst have to accomplish is: defining the requirements and scope, studying key issues, reviewing and generating possible solutions, and presenting a final recommendation. IT solutions analysts normally have experience of working in the IT industry for about 5-10 years. The first task that IT solutions analysts have to do is defining the requirements and scope of the project. The IT solutions analyst has to consult with the client to establish the client’s expectations. This includes the budget, time line and any available resources.

The next task is studying the key issues. This involves addressing the client’s concerns and ideas. An IT solutions analyst has to fully assess the situation so that he or she has all the information needed to come up with a suitable solution to the problem. It is also the responsibility of an IT solution analyst to look at the situation from different angles and help the client understand the situation fully as well.

The next task is to generate possible solutions and ideas for the client. This is where the in depth knowledge on software products will come in handy. The IT solution analyst should be able to easily think of the software that would meet the client’s expectations. On top of that, the IT solution analyst also has to provide detailed information about the advantages and disadvantages of the software to help the client make an informed decision.

After these three tasks have been accomplished, the last task is to make a final recommendation to the client. Usually the IT solutions analyst will come up with a number of final solutions, which will be presented to the client. The presentation will include items such as the risks and benefits, the type of products that should be used, and also the rationale for the final solution. Once the client has all the information, they can then make an informed decision to meet their business needs.


It is not easy to become an IT solution analyst. The position requires a combination of skills, work experience and education. Most companies today require a degree in a field that is related to IT. The minimum experience required is usually 4 years. It is also better to work under various industries to strengthen analyzing skills and provide a good foundation from which to make suggestions and evaluations.

An IT solutions analyst should have both soft skills and technical skills. Examples of soft skills are communication skills, persuasion skills, negotiation skills and presentation skills. While technical skills refer to factors such as education level, working experience and knowledge on the industry. Apart from having such skills, IT solutions analysts have to have good foresight and good adaptability as the IT industry is constantly advancing at a rapid rate.
