Welding is the process of joining two metallic materials by melting a filler metal with the components. A joint is formed in this process. Welders are people who possess the skill to weld. However, before we talk about welders, it is important to know what welding is. Other welding accessories include welding blankets. Welding can be done in many different types of methods, this article will be discussing more about the role of welders and how welding is performed.


Welding can be done through various energy sources such as an electric arc, laser, ultrasound or a gas flame. It was not until the 20th century when modern welding techniques began to develop. Before that, welding was done through a process called forge welding. In forge welding, a strong heat is applied to the two pieces of metal and the worker will hammer the heated areas until the two metals bond. During the industrial revolution, the process of welding developed as well and it became especially important during the World War I and World War II periods.


In modern times, there are even more efficient ways to weld. One of the ways is arc welding. Arc welding uses an electric current as the energy source. The good thing about arc welding is that it can be easily done through inexpensive equipment. Another type of welding process is known as gas welding. Gas welding is mainly done in for reparation purposes, especially on metal tubes and pipes. Other industries such as plastic or jewel industries also use gas welding. This is because the heat produced from a gas burner is just right for such materials; if the heat is at a higher temperature then it may damage the materials. Another method that can be used is resistance welding.

Resistance welding involves the use of filler metals, which are basically additional metal sheets, to weld the two pieces of metal together. While this method is the least harmful to the environment, the equipment used can be quite costly and not all applications are able to use this method. The next method is probably the most advanced and it is energy beam welding. This method is extremely accurate and fast. However, it is also extremely costly to use which make it impractical for use in many industries.


Welding cannot be done with all types of metals as some of them tend to crack when they are overheated; for example, stainless steel. Welding should not be done with alloys as people are unable to tell the exact chemical composition of metals. Welding may sometimes causes sparks and slag to fly around and it may damage the surrounding areas. To tackle this problem, people use welding blankets. Welding blankets are made of thermal materials that are resistant to sparks and flames.

 

Welding blankets do not burn and if they come into contact with a source of flame the material that it is made of ensures that the source of flame is extinguished by itself. Furthermore, theses welding blankets do not burn or melt. Welding blankets can withstand temperatures of up to 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. The melting point of the welding blanket does drop over time due to the constant exposure to flame sources.


Welding has become a highly automated process over the past few years through the use of intelligent robots. However, there are still many applications where welders come in handy. A welder is known as someone who has the skills to craft two pieces of metal together. Welders can either weld metals or plastics.


As metals have been worked with by people for centuries, welding may be considered an ancient profession. The first metal workers or welders have been in the bronze and iron ages. Even at that time, ancient welders used some sort of heat to melt the metals and join them together.


Most of the welders today work in heavy industries as welding is an important process when producing ships, trains, cars and other metal objects. The construction industry also hires many welders to weld and secure heavy steel frames together. There are also welders in light industries, or they could be freelance contractors that fix metal objects.


It is thanks to welders that our buildings are secure, our car frames are solid and overall our large metal objects are neatly put together. A welder has to get the proper training if not he or she may not be able to properly join the metals together.
