A chemical element with an atomic number 82 and the symbol Pb in the Periodic Table, lead is a soft, poor malleable metal. It gets its periodic symbol of Pb from its Latin name “plumbum”. It does not usually occur in its purest form in nature but has to be extracted out from galena, a natural mineral, through a smelting process.

Lead is a chemical element found in compound group known to its softness, malleability, and as a heavy post-transition metal. It is used in building construction, lead-acid batteries, bullets and shot, weights, as part of solders, pewters, fusible alloys, and as radiation shield.

Lead metal application varies from its elemental form, compounds, and former applications. It is utilized by many industries to take advantage of its low melting point, ductility, and high density rate.

Its low melting point makes casting of lead easy, hence small arms ammunition and shotgun pellets can be cast with minimal technical requirement. In addition, leads are inexpensive and denser than any common metals.

Another uses of this chemical compound includes making of ballast keel in sailboats due to its high density and resistance to corrosion. Its high density allows counterbalance of sails during wind’s heeling effect, and at the same time occupying a small volume and thus offering the least underwater resistance. Other application is for SCUBA diving weight belts.

Uses of lead metal added to brass reduce machine tool wear. It has many uses in the construction industry like lead metal sheets for architectural metal roofing, cladding, flashing, gutters and gutter joints, and on roof parapets.

Moreover, lead compounds are good resources of coloring element in ceramic glazes, precisely in red and yellow colors. It is as well used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics in coating electrical cords.

These and other useful application of metal lead is taking advantage of various industrial, commercial, and consumer establishments. The Green Book Singapore directory offers listings of Lead Companies and Suppliers offering an array of lead products and related services.
