Brake linings were invented in the late 1800’s by Bertha Benz, the wife of Karl Benz the inventor of automobile. A brake lining was made for the purpose of reducing heat caused by friction when breaks do their job of stopping power from wheels. Quality brake linings are usually made of heat resistant rubbery material that prevents metal backing to have contact with the rotors or drums, an essential function that can’t be neglected to prevent damages and annoying sounds. There are different types of brake linings known as organic, ceramic, semi-metallic and metallic linings.

Organic brake linings usually are made out of resin, fiberglass (Kevlar), and or rubber. They are recommended for normal driving since they can only withstand low temperatures. These linings promote low rotor wear and are really quiet on operations.

Ceramic brake linings win over organic brake linings in almost all aspects. They can withstand high temperature with low dust and pad wear. Although linings have higher rotor wear rate than organic but performs quiet if not better than the organic ones.

Semi-metallic and metallic brake linings are used in extreme performances like car racing that requires pads that can withstand extreme temperature and pressure. Although these linings perform weak on low temperature operations and are extremely noisy at use.

Depending on the function and preferences of automobile use, brake linings used in constructing good brake pads or brake shoes become essential to improve performance and reduce wear. Replacing them after a brake check could be very challenging as an incorrect or a substandard lining could lead to damages on drums, rivets and rotors requiring some re-machining which is very troublesome.
