Dry Chemical Extinguisher

Fire Extinguishers are well known as protection devices used to control small fire in an emergency situation and it consist hand held cylindrical pressure vessel containing an outstanding agent discharged to control fire. Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher typically uses nitrogen as propellants and is the most ideal fire extinguisher at home.

This Dry Chemical Extinguisher - dry powder fire extinguisher covers and manages the fire through inert solid and produces very fine powders of sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, or monoammonium phosphate that fleeces the fuel and oppresses the fire.

Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher is widely used in extinguishing fire by disrupting chemical reaction of fire triangle, this fire triangle consist of four (4) elements which are oxygen – for sustaining the combustion, heat – for raising up material to its ignition, fuel – for supporting combustion and lastly the chemical reaction between the three elements that have to be present in order for fire to take in place. To stop fire means to disturb this fire triangle concept by separating the four elements.

2 Types of Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher

• BC – regular type of dry chemical extinguisher which is filled with sodium bicarbonate/ potassium bicarbonate, this BC Dry Chemical Extinguisher leaves a gentle corrosive residue that needs to be cleaned as soon as possible to prevent any damage it may bring to the material

• ABC – the multipurpose dry chemical extinguisher is composed of yellow powder monoammonium phosphate that leaves sticky filtrate making this type not applicable for appliances due to the damage it can do. ABC Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers are not applicable on fire caused by chlorine and oxidizer because of the chemical reaction that may lead to explosion or production of toxic gases due to breaking down of chemical. This type is also not advisable to be used in aircraft due to its corrosive properties.

This fire extinguisher can handle types of fire that is usually find in the kitchen and workshop station such as wood, paper, gasoline, electrical fires and grease. This ABC/ Multi Purpose Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher are suitable for Class A, Class B, and Class C fires. Class A fire can be extinguished by melting approximately 350ºF and coats the surface in where it is applied. For Class B fire, it breaks the chain reaction of flammable gas or liquid smoother. In Class C, the powder used wouldn’t conduct electricity back to the operator for safety usage in class C fires.

Even though fire extinguishers have many varieties, most of them work basically and on the same way. Just familiarize and remember the acronym “PASS” in using a Fire Extinguisher.

• P – Pull the pin
• A – Aim the hose/nozzle to the base of the fire from recommended safe distance
• S – Squeeze the lever for discharging a fire extinguisher agent
• S – Sweep the hose/nozzle from side to side until the fire is extinguished.

After the fire has been extinguished, make sure that the area is already safe and ensure that the fire will not ignite again.

To make sure that the Fire Extinguisher will work efficiently in all premises, make sure that:
• It is located in an accessible place
• The Fire Extinguisher is positioned for proper handling and without any obstruction
• The Fire Extinguisher must always be charged, regularly changed and pressure dial is regularly checked for better functionality
• Check if there is any damages and corrosions that may hinder its performance
