Health Benefits of Common Herbs

Herbs and spices are typically associated to each other. Both have medicinal and culinary purposes. Their distinction can be recognized by knowing which part of the plant they came from. The green leafy plants are normally herbs while the rest such as seeds, bark, roots and flower buds are considered spices.


All herbs have medicinal value. They are said able to give nutrients and cure some illnesses. Those that are used for cooking are called culinary herbs. They are added to the dishes as seasonings and flavorings. Herbs are humble ingredients for they enhance the taste of a food without introducing itself on the person ingesting it. This is beneficial to those who are not fond of eating vegetables for herbs only linger in the background while giving the same nutritional benefits. Some common herbs are rosemary, oregano, basil and parsley.


Rosemary improves flavor of roasted meats, fish steaks and gives better taste to bread. Intake of rosemary can enhance memory function, make hair strong and shine, and protect brain from radical damage.


Oregano makes tomato sauces more flavorful and works with spicy food. It contains flavonoids that serve as an antioxidant. It is also a good source of Vitamin A, iron, omega-3 fatty acids and manganese. Oregano, when freshly eaten, improves immune function.


Basil is the main flavor source of pesto. Besides being the main ingredient of this pasta dish, basil can also be mixed with rice and is a great pair to tomato sauce or soup. It contains nutrients that work as an antioxidant similar to oregano. Vitamin K in basil plays a vital role in strengthening the bones.


Parsley is probably the most frequently used herb. The leaf can either be finely grated and sprinkled on top of prepared dishes or used as a whole in salads and meat food. Parsley behaves as an anti-cancer, anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory and immunity system booster.
