Types of Natural Fabrics

Clothing is one of the basic necessities of mankind. We will be susceptible to extreme weather conditions and insect bites if nothing is used to cover our body. Early humans used animal skin and vegetation to protect themselves. Today, people wear fibers knitted, weaved or felted called fabrics.

There are innumerable types of fabrics made from natural and synthetic fibers. Natural fibers are obtained from nature such as plants, animals and minerals while synthetic ones are man-made fibers created by chemical processes. Some of the latter are manufactured as a response to the weaknesses of the former. However, wearing fabrics made of natural fiber is still way better than those made from synthetic fibers. The common types of natural fabrics are cotton, linen, wool and silk.

Cotton fabric is made from the fiber of plant. It is widely used as clothing since it is strong, hygienic, wear resistant, has cool fiber and comfortable. It can be washed many times without worrying that it will shrink. The downside of cotton is that it lacks elasticity causing it to wrinkle easily. Polyester is a wrinkle resistant fabric made from synthetic fibers.

Linen is a cloth derived from the fiber of flax. Similar to cotton, it is durable and can even exceed in coolness. Its general uses are creating tablecloths, curtains, pillow cases and sheets. The production of linen is costlier than cotton.

Wool came from the soft curly hair taken from a live sheep. It is used to give warmth yet still comfortable to wear. Its tendency to shrink when washed with hot water and being more expensive because of the source of its fiber are some of the disadvantages of wool fabrics.

Silk is considered the strongest fabric made from natural fibers produced by silkworms. Lingerie and underwear make use of silk because of its natural beauty. It dyes easily but fades quickly if not properly taken care of.

Aside from the strengths of natural fabrics mentioned above, they also do not go through chemical processes which may be harmful to the skin.
