Electrical Switchboards

An electrical switchboard is a device which directs electricity from various sources of supply to a number of small regions of consumption. It is a collection of one or more panels, each of that includes switches which enable the electricity to be redirected.

There are a number of electric supplies that make up an electrical switchboard such as frame, buses, overcurrent protective devices as well as outer covers.

The frame of an electrical switchboard supports and houses the other components that make up an electrical switchboard. The most standard switchboard frame dimension is 32 or 38 inches wide and a height of 90 inches. The second most common measurement of an electrical switchboard is a height of 70 inches and 32, 38, or 46 inches wide. A switchboard has a depth measurement from 20 inches up to 58 inches according to requirements.

A bus is a conductor or a set of conductors which serves as a joint connection designed for two or more circuits. Electrical switchboard buses are purposely built from metal bus bars that are set up within the switchboard in order to carry out power to a variety of devices.

A bus bar, also referred to as busbar, buss bar or bussbar, is a metallic narrow piece, commonly aluminium, copper or brass, which is capable of carrying electricity inside a switchboard, substation, distribution board, battery bank or another electrical apparatus. Its main function is not to work as a structural member of the switchboard but to conduct large current of electricity. The cross sectional size and material composition of the bus bar establish the maximum amount of current which can be carried safely.

Buses are set up inside the frame. Horizontal bus bars are utilized to allocate power to every section of the switchboard while vertical busbars help distribute power through over current devices to load devices. Bus bars in electrical switchboards are made up of silver – finished copper or tin – finished aluminium. Bus bars may be current density rated or temperature rated.

A bus connector is the electrical and mechanical connection between a horizontal bus bar and its corresponding vertical bus bar. Splice plates are utilized to connect horizontal bus bars of neighboring sections of the switch board. The horizontal bus bars are pre-drilled and are extended to accept splice plates in order to create additional allocation sections. The extended horizontal bus bar is known as through-bus.

Overcurrent Protective Devices
Overcurrent protective devices like disconnect switch and circuit breakers are installed on the bus bars with straps linked to the line side of the devices while operator components are set up on the front side of the electric switchboard.

Outer Covers
Cover panels are necessary to be installed on the electrical switchboard so that no energized parts are out in the open. Dead front is the term used to refer to the front cover; no live parts are exposed when the panels and covers are closed. These panels are utilized as trim to give a finished look to the electric switchboard as well; a necessity when it comes to electrical supplies.
