Sugar Industry of Singapore Ltd. was originally founded in 1967 by the Singapore Government as a strategic move to provide secure nutrition for the people of Singapore, as it strove to become an autonomous and prosperous nation. Under government management, Sugar Industry of Singapore Ltd. established Singapore’s first and only sugar refinery, recognising sugar as a critical and important resource for Singaporeans in good times and in difficult times. In 1988, the sugar industry in Singapore was deregulated and opened up to private investment. This meant that Sugar Industry of Singapore Ltd. would no longer exist in its original form. ED&F Man Holdings (UK), one of the world’s oldest and largest commodity companies purchased Sugar Industry of Singapore Ltd to form SIS ’88 Pte Ltd (SIS) which assumed ownership of the sugar refinery at Jurong Port Road.
