Aprons are a type of protective garment that can be worn over clothing, usually over the front of the body. The application of aprons is generally related to domestic uses such as cooking or dish washing in homes. However, they are often part of the uniform in many jobs such as waitresses, domestic workers and nurses. The purpose of wearing an apron varies, depending on their application. It can be for hygienic purposes, safety issues or protecting the clothing from stains, wear and tear. Many women may even wear aprons as a decorative garment over their clothing. Over the years, aprons have evolved and some modern aprons are designed in a way that does not require it to be worn over clothing, but instead itself acts as the main garment covering a body. In commercial establishments such as those dealing with metal sculpting, aprons are also worn to protect the worker’s clothes from getting damaged. Some examples of such aprons are blacksmith or farrier aprons.
Although aprons are commonly thought to be made of only cloth, aprons that are used for applications such as working with chemicals would require to be made from different types of material. Such aprons are made from rubber to prevent the chemicals from seeping through and contacting the skin of the user in case of a spill. Another type is lead aprons which are used by people who are working with and constantly exposed to X-rays. These aprons help to prevent the radiation from getting through to the user’s body and causing damage and harm to the person. Domestic aprons used in homes can come in a variety of styles. Those that are used by chefs would have pockets near the front bottom to keep utensils. Similarly, aprons used by carpenters would have several pockets to house tools. There are also waterproof aprons available in the market today that are used for dishwashing or cooking. These help to prevent the users’ clothes from getting wet or stained.
Aside from those types of aprons mentioned above, there are also style variations in aprons. One variation in the styles of aprons can be the waist and bib apron. The waist apron spots a style that is tied over the waist and covers the body down from there. The bib apron on the other hand covers the upper part as well as the lower part of the body. Regular aprons usually have two ribbon-like strips that are tied around the back. Also bib aprons usually have a strap through which a user can put his or her head through. This strap helps to hold the aprons in a secured place, preventing it from dropping even if the strap around the waist comes loose. However both these designs have their own advantages and disadvantages. Waist aprons allow more ease of movement for the user and therefore are commonly used by waiters and waitresses as they would constantly need to move around. The disadvantage with these is that they can easily come loose, unlike the bib aprons. The disadvantage of using the bib aprons is that they can restrict ease of movement, and therefore are preferably used in cooking or dishwashing.
As discussed above, such aprons usually have a number of pockets to hold the carpenter’s tools. As carpenters are usually active and constantly moving about, climbing ladders etc, it would be logical for it to have pockets that can allow them to carry the essential tools that they would need with them. These aprons are usually made of denim material that provides strength to hold all the tools whilst preventing the carpenter’s clothes from getting stained.
Similar to the carpenter’s apron, these aprons also have several pockets to hold the tools that a welder would require. The difference between the carpenter and welder’s apron is that the welder’s apron is made from leather, which is flame resistant and is able to withstand the damages of the sparks which occur during welding. These aprons also have double stitching with metal fasteners that provide the apron with more durability and strength.
