Aerosols are liquid substances such as paint, detergent, disinfectant, deodorant, polish, or insecticide dispensed from a small container under pressure with a gaseous propellant and released as a spray or foam of fine particles. They can be hazardous if not used properly. Acute symptoms of aerosol exposure include nausea, headache, shortness of breath, dizziness, throat irritation and skin rash. In order to prevent sickness caused by aerosols, special precautions must be done.

Aerosol products must be stored and handled with caution. They must be placed according to product label recommendations. An aerosol, if placed near a heater, fire, direct sunlight or other heat source, can cause explosion. It can burst as well if the can is punctured.

A completely empty can of aerosol can be thrown in the regular trash. However, a full or partially full should not be disposed into the regular bin as it might injure other people who by chance get contact with it such as the refuse collectors.

Aerosol cans must be kept away from children. Always wear proper personal protective equipment such as goggles, respirators and gloves when spraying. When there are individuals around who are susceptible to illness like children or babies, avoid applying this product. Exposed food or eating utensils nearby should be covered as well. Spilled aerosols should be immediately cleaned up to stop it from spreading.

If you have left over aerosols, it is best to use all of the remaining aerosol sprays or give them away to friends, neighbors or community groups that might accept the cans as part of their metal recycling program.

Aerosols are utilized in a lot of ways. Some are used to exterminate insect pests while some helps in beautifying the walls of our house. Though inhaling them can cause health problems, it can be prevented by following the proper usage of each aerosol products.
