Advantages of LED lights

LED lights use small semiconductors that are capable of converting electricity to light. The electricity moves along the path of semiconductor creating electromagnetic radiation thus taking the form of light. The light emitted could be of any color depending on the material the semiconductor is made of. The most common semiconductor being used in LED bulb is nitride which produces blue or white light. LED was invented in Russia in 1920s yet only began to be applied by companies such as General Electric, Monsanto Corporation and Hewlett-Packard in 1960s. The early application of LED is in Christmas lights but it increasingly gained its popularity in residences, offices and household devices such as flashlights and lamps. LED or light-emitting diode is known for being energy efficient. They are also expected to replace light bulbs as development in its technology made LED lights become cheaper and more efficient.

 

Compared to other lighting technologies such as filament bulbs and fluorescent bulbs, LED lights contain more advantageous features. Filament produce way more heat than LED making the former prone to breakage and weakening. Fluorescent bulbs, on the other hand, contain mercury that is hazardous to human health. It also consumes much more energy than LED and is prone to breakage like filament bulb. Among the lighting technologies, these prove that LED is more efficient and lasts longer. It is also safer to use as they don’t burn out but simply fade. Other good qualities of LEDs are that they are shock and vibration resistant; do not cause interference with television or radio broadcast for they do not generate radio frequency waves and do not emit ultra violet light which tend to attract bugs.

 

There has already been abundant applications discovered for LED lights yet many other more is being implemented. They are used in anything that needs a light that is inexpensive, bright and can last for a long time such as computer, screen displays, traffic lights, brake lights, exit signs, store displays and many more. They have been a great lighting replacement to cathode ray tube (CRT) television sets paving the way to slimmer, lighter and more energy efficient LED televisions. There are also LED lights versions suitable for them to use in light fixtures and regular lamps but this type tend to be expensive. New flashlights use LED technology as its light can be easily directed in steady streams at a specific location. LED lights can come in very small pieces which allow them to be used in watches, clocks and as indicator lights in cars.

 

Even though LED lights are expensive to buy, it can be more cost efficient in the long run. The time it will last mean that it does not need to be replaced often as compared when fluorescent or incandescent lights are used. LED lasts for about 50,000 hours longer than incandescent bulb and can be 300 percent more efficient compared to a compact fluorescent light. LED lights also consume much less energy. The amount saved due to low energy consumption will compensate the high cost one spent from buying LED lights.
