Advantages of Dried Beans

Also known as legumes or pulses, beans are part of a large category of vegetables and are an excellent source of protein or fiber. There is a large variety of beans that are grown worldwide and they are one of the most nutritious foods available on this planet. When compared to grains, beans are able to provide two to four times as much protein and their small size contains a varied array of essential nutrition that is vital for good health. One of the most debated topic concerning the nutrition that beans are able to provide is whether the protein that these foods provide complete or incomplete. Beans are foods of non-animal origin, therefore they do not contain all the essential amino acids that are required in a healthy diet. Foods of animal origin are able to supply these essential amino acids. Despite the fact that it is important to attain both essential and non-essential amino acids, it is not necessary that one should eat meat products to attain them. Animals are usually exposed to several types of chemicals and antibiotics which would affect the quality of meat, therefore one should eat meat based products only in moderation. One way to overcome this issue can be consuming beans together with brown rice, which is also rich in fiber and protein. These two foods would be able to supplement the necessary nutrition that the other might not have.


Eating beans have several health benefits. Beans are able to lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of many different types of cancers, lower blood pressure and prevent and cure constipation. These were only some of the benefits that consuming beans can have on health. Now, although beans offer several benefits, it is still advisable to consume the healthier version of the food. As for beans, one can purchase these foods either cooked or dried. Be it cooked or dried, beans are still beans and they still remain an excellent sources of protein and fiber. They are both able to provide the human body with several of the essential nutrition required for healthy living.


Although most would prefer consuming cooked beans over dried beans, the benefits offered by dried beans far outweigh those offered by cooked beans. Dry beans that are purchased in bags do not contain any sodium in contrast to cooked canned beans that have a high amount of sodium present in them. Half a cup of canned beans can contain 20% of the human body’s daily requirement of sodium. Individuals who are concerned about their blood pressure or other health issues should not consume too much sodium as it could be harmful for their health. This entails that they should consume dried beans as they do not contain sodium and still are able to provide those essential nutrients. Canned beans also tend to have preservatives added to them which allow a user to store them for a long time before they spoil. The preservatives added may not always be beneficial to health. In contrast to this, a user can cook his or her own beans and take note of the ingredients that he or she adds to the beans, providing better control over diet.


Other advantages of consuming dried beans can be the fact that they are usually cheaper as compared to canned beans and they allow flexibility in cooking dishes for people who want to cook their beans in a certain desired way. Canned beans would have been pre-cooked and therefore they cannot be used to cook in the consumer’s desired manner. Also, dried beans can be stored for several years and in some cases even more than ten years if stored in a dark and dry environment. In contrast, dry beans cannot be stored for such a long time and would turn bad after a certain period of time. One disadvantage that dried beans may have is the fact that they are required to be soaked for a long period of time before they can be used. However, this is a minor disadvantage and can be overcome if the user is to plan ahead.
